Part 4 of 5 · Testimonial Carousel

The Detail That Made the Reviews Feel Real

Deployed on real sites, the carousel met two requirements that no demo surfaces. Sites serving Urdu and Arabic speaking audiences needed testimonials in those languages, with everything that implies technically. And clients kept asking a question that is not technical at all, can you just write us some testimonials. This post is both, the multilingual work, and the line I hold on where quotes come from.

Multilingual first, because it is genuinely technical. Text in another language is the easy part, the repeater’s fields hold any script already. Direction is the real work, Urdu and Arabic run right to left, and a carousel has direction baked into everything, slide order, arrow meaning, text alignment. The widget gained a direction control, and its value flows into both the markup and the library:

$dir = $s['rtl_mode'] === 'yes' ? 'rtl' : 'ltr';
printf('<div class="swiper everse-carousel" dir="%s">', esc_attr($dir));
new Swiper('.everse-carousel', {
    // Swiper reads the dir attribute; slides and navigation mirror correctly
    autoplay: { delay: speed, disableOnInteraction: true },
});

The dir attribute makes the browser lay the text out correctly, and Swiper respects it, mirroring slide progression and navigation so the carousel moves the way a right-to-left reader expects. Typography needed its own attention, the style controls’ font choices matter differently per script, Urdu’s Nastaliq-style fonts need larger sizes and looser line height to stay readable, so the typography controls stayed fully open rather than presetting Latin assumptions. Testing with real Urdu text, not lorem ipsum, caught every one of these, placeholder text is silently left-to-right and hides the entire category.

Now the other requirement, the one I decline. Can you write us some testimonials means invent praise from customers who do not exist, and the answer is no, stated plainly and kept. The practical argument alone suffices, invented testimonials are the fake trust signals from the visa site’s series, they convert until one sceptical visitor, one competitor, or one regulator looks closely, and many jurisdictions treat fabricated reviews as actionable deception, a real legal exposure clients rarely price. The deeper argument is the one this blog runs on, a testimonial is borrowed credibility, and borrowing from nobody is counterfeiting. What I offer instead works better anyway, a small collection workflow, a message template the client sends to genuinely happy customers, permission asked for name and city, and the real quotes flowing into the repeater. Real people, real words, arranged beautifully, that is the product, and the carousel’s job is presentation, never fabrication.

A few things people ask me about this

What breaks first in a right-to-left carousel? Slide progression and arrow meaning, a carousel advancing leftward reads backwards to a right-to-left audience. Set dir on the container and verify the library mirrors, then check text alignment and font sizing.

How do I get real testimonials for a new business? Ask, systematically, a short message to genuinely served customers requesting a sentence and permission to use their name. Response rates are better than people fear, and five real quotes outperform fifty invented ones the day anyone checks.

That completes the carousel’s build and its boundaries. The finale weighs what a deliberately small project taught me about reuse, libraries, and lines.
